Have you ever painted with sunlight?
That’s what it feels like when I work with cyanotypes.
It’s an antique technique developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842, over 180 years ago……And somehow, it still feels like magic.
Cyanotype is a form of camera-less photography.
I coat thick water colour paper with a solution of iron salts. The solution is light sensitive, so I do it at night, in the dark.
I usually make a mess. It’s splashy and chaotic, but also kind of thrilling.
I hide the sheets away to dry in darkness, protected from any stray light.
It all starts In the morning, I step into my garden. It’s quiet.
The gentle sun is awakening the leaves.
I gather whatever calls to me....roots, stems, petals, and sometimes things from my studio too.
Beads. Feathers. Precious fabrics. Tiny shells.
Foraging in the garden / collected treasures/ setting the creative scene
I arrange them carefully on the dried cyanotype paper and lay them out in the sun.
And then I wait.
This is the part that always feels like a mystery.
Each moment in the sun changes everything.
Too long, and it overdevelops.
Too short, and it’s pale.
It’s like trying to catch a perfect breath.
When I rinse the paper in fresh water, the images begin to appear.
Brilliant white against deep Prussian blue.
It feels like watching something being born.

Once these paper creations have dried, I move into the next phase, collage.
This part is slow. Intuitive. I spread everything out in my studio.
Pieces slide around. They shift. I wait for them to click into place.
Then I begin cutting. Layering. Adding ink, textures and fragments.
That’s when the stories begin to show up.

Sometimes I see the ocean floor, or outer space, the first spark of creation.
Sometimes I see portals. Dreams. Cycles of life.
I don’t try to explain it. I just follow the feeling.
In the finished pieces called ‘Symphony in Blue’, the ancient and the new are merging.
The elements of my seaside garden. The vastness of the cosmos.
Each circular piece reflects something eternal, nature, time, and our connection to everything.
Because in the end, I don’t think these pieces are just about the plants or the stars.
They’re about us.

About Mia Rappel
Mia is a practicing visual artist working primarily in collage, sculptural installation and digital storytelling, her work aims to articulate through form, movement, texture and colour. Mia also works in the social sector devising and facilitating public art projects and has worked extensively as a visual designer for retail, interior and outdoor spaces.
Mia has twice been the People’s Choice Award winner for the Art Town Exhibition in Stonnington, and has been Artist in Residence at Point Nepean, Australia, at Baile en el Aire, Spain and at La Muse, France. Mia has exhibited in the prestigious Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe exhibition and participated in the concurrent education program.
Some of Mia’s past Clients include Adidas, Husk, Shire of Melton, Shire of Yarra Ranges, Eastern Regional Libraries and Sweet Co.
Mia has completed a Bachelor of Visual and Performing Arts at the VCA, Victorian College of the Arts.
