You know that feeling when it’s time to do something big?
well actually when you just have to do something that’s burning in you to do !! ?
A while back I knew I needed to go deeper into my art practice, into my creativity, so I committed to an Artist's Retreat.
A retreat in an ancient mountain village in France.
To be exact -The La Muse Inn, in the hilltop village of Labastide-Esparbairenque, South West France, North of the walled city of Carcassonne. 😊
It was Autumn. Beautiful, mysterious Autumn.
It was a 3 week feast of nature, solitude and creativity.
My daily rhythm was spent working in the stone studio, or in my beautiful windowed room, looking out over the valley. I spent the days mostly in silence and the evenings feasting on replenishing food, with the other artists and writers in residence.
The local valley produce included honey, chestnuts, walnuts, grapes, wines, goats cheese, rabbit, sun ripened tomatoes and silverbeet like you've never tasted.

But the essence, the center of this beautiful experience were my walks.
Long long walks through the valleys and the mountains everyday……trekking along tiny goat paths and following rivers.
Have you ever embarked on a walk or a hike in an unfamiliar place and thought "I have no idea where this is taking me but I don't care"? That is what it felt like."
While getting lost and finding new paths through the mountains, I experienced deep quiet and a deep immersion in nature.
It was here that “The Passage” Collection began.
On these walks I photographed ancient stone cemeteries and moss covered stone walls, luminous tumbling clouds, temple altars of the Cathar people and chestnut groves sprinkled in golden leaves.
Hello Inspiration ! Yes!
In my studio in Melbourne I collated photographs from my French journey, as well as explorations from Koa Tao jungles, Tasmanian lakes, and Victorian ocean beaches.
I gathered all my materials, papers, textures, photos, working long dedicated hours cutting, trimming, arranging, gluing, painting, resin pouring…… slowly and steadily following the threads, forming these collages. It felt like I was pulling together the random moments of discovery on my walks.
See if you can't get a sense of unstructured or uncontrolled wandering and discovery when you look at these art pieces.
That sense of freedom is what I am hoping might get triggered for you.

The Passage
The works in The Passage Collection ask the question, ‘as the invisible emerges ….which path will you take?' These works developed from walking extensively in nature, taking time to allow the essence of the land to sink in.
The resulting Collagesexplore the intersection points of nature and the human form, the merging of the inner and outer realms of our daily life.
The Collages use a combination of cut photographs from my journeys, hand cut papers, ink and gouache. Each piece is entirely created by hand, layering the papers and photographs, then adding details with inks. After the meticulous gluing process, they are then sealed in a hand poured resin finish.
Each one of these works is a journey to connection, reaching through the dark void to connect with this beautiful life.

About Mia Rappel
Mia is a practicing visual artist working primarily in collage, sculptural installation and digital storytelling, her work aims to articulate through form, movement, texture and colour. Mia also works in the social sector devising and facilitating public art projects and has worked extensively as a visual designer for retail, interior and outdoor spaces.
Mia has twice been the People’s Choice Award winner for the Art Town Exhibition in Stonnington, and has been Artist in Residence at Point Nepean, Australia, at Baile en el Aire, Spain and at La Muse, France. Mia has exhibited in the prestigious Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe exhibition and participated in the concurrent education program.
Some of Mia’s past Clients include Adidas, Husk, Shire of Melton, Shire of Yarra Ranges, Eastern Regional Libraries and Sweet Co.
Mia has completed a Bachelor of Visual and Performing Arts at the VCA, Victorian College of the Arts.
